Final Fantasy X
|
Squaresoft have been making Final Fantasy's for some time now, starting alway back on the NES with Final Fantasy. However, the Final Fantasy genre did not really luanch off until Final Fantasy 7 with it's excellent story and Materia. Probably the best Final Fantasy RPG of all time. Next, then was Final Fantasy 8, 9 and finally, 10 on the Playstaion 2. 10 is the lastest installment from squaresoft of the Final Fantasy series. Although 10 is not the best Final Fantasy, it is one of the best, with the best graphics and new battle system.
Final Fantasy 10 also has something that none of the other Final Fantasy's had, a new Sphere Grid, which is highly optimizable and customizable, which is always important in any game I feel. In the standard grid, the characters had to go a certain route, although, later on, you can divert them to other routes. However in the expert mode, you can take the characters any route you want to begin with, also, there are more empty nodes, which is handy for later on betting your characters better.
Also, another differnece is that the weapons don't actually give you any attacking advantage in the fact that it doesn't increase your attack. (although some weapons can increase strength) Later on, you will be able to customize your weapons and have any abillity you want like counter-attack or evade and counter, even things like Break damage limit are avaliable. It is actually very difficult to explain, so I apologize if it isn't very clear. The armour (you only have one weapon and one armour to equip) works in the same way, where it can come already customized or with empty spaces ready for customizing. To customize weapons and armour you need to get specific items and a specific amount of those itmes to be able to customize a certain abillity assigned to that item onto the weapon/armour.
Another addition is a ATB meter at the side which tells you how many turns you have until the enemy will attack, which can be very helpful for preparing your attacks. Any character can learn any move, although some will still be slighlty better then others at certain moves. Like in all Final Fantasy's, there is an Limit Break, it's now called Overdrive. Each character has there own specific Overdrive to use, but they are not all easy to aquire, Tidus' you need to use over and over again. Wakka's, you need to win very hard events against (more then likely) the Al Bhed Psychs, the hardest team in the game.
There is a mimi-game in FF10, which I hate, but all my friends love, its called Blitzball, It's a bit like football, except you can use your hands to pass and your underwater. It's not like most football games, if a player comes near you, you stop and have to select what to do, alternitavly, you can just press square and a sub-menu will come up asking you what you want to do.
The summoning also plays a part in this game, but more so then it did in the previous ones. You now have full control over your aeons (as they are called in FF10) when you summon them, they have Overdrives too, very, very powerfull ones, and they get more powerful the more secret the aeon is. There is one flaw I think, its Jojimbo (an aeon), one of his attacks is Zanmoto, which can kill ANY opponent in one hit, which, to me, seems a bit stupid. You can also improve your aeons by using items to give them abillities and attributes, although, i never use the attributes because as Yuna (the summoner) gets stronger, so do the aeons.
Overall, Final Fantasy 10 is most probably the bset RPG to grace the Playstation 2 so far, (apart from perhaps FFX-2, out September 23rd......Maybe) and it will take you a very long while to do. My friend Chris has his file which is 250+ hours long, mine is 140+, and I still am nowhere near likely to complete it yet. So when you buy this game, be prepared for a long play to fully complete it.
